Privacy Policy
Bhopper is an iPhone app that shows live, crowd-sourced cover charges and wait times at Boston bars. This policy explains exactly what the app collects, why, and how to delete it.
What we collect
- An anonymous device identifier. When you first launch Bhopper, the app generates a random UUID and stores it in the iOS Keychain. This UUID is the only thing that ties your submitted reports to "you". We never collect a name, email, phone number, or any identifier you'd recognize as yourself.
- Your approximate proximity to a bar at the moment of a post. If you grant location permission and submit a Cover or Wait report, the app classifies how close you are to the bar into a coarse tier (verified ≤150 m, nearby ≤1 km, remote >1 km, or unknown if location was denied). Only this tier is stored. The raw latitude and longitude are discarded as soon as the tier is computed.
- The cover and wait values you submit. Stored as a numeric bucket (e.g. "$5" cover, "10–30 min" wait) together with the bar, the time, your anonymous device UUID, and the proximity tier.
What we do not collect
- No name, email, phone, address, or other personal contact information.
- No raw GPS coordinates or location history — only the discrete proximity tier above.
- No third-party analytics, no advertising SDKs, no cross-app tracking.
- No contacts, photos, microphone, calendar, or health data.
- No payment information; Bhopper has no purchases or subscriptions.
Why we collect it
The anonymous device UUID and proximity tier exist so we can aggregate many reports into a single trustworthy estimate (e.g. "$5 cover at this bar, 8 minutes ago"). The UUID also lets you delete every report you've ever submitted (see "Deleting your data" below).
Where it's stored
Reports are stored in our backend hosted on Supabase. The app communicates with the backend exclusively over HTTPS using Apple's standard URLSession. Your anonymous UUID lives in the iOS Keychain on your device.
Who we share it with
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone. We also do not send your data to any advertising or analytics network. The cover and wait values you submit are visible to other Bhopper users in aggregated form — that is the entire purpose of the app — but they are never attributed to a name or visible identity.
Deleting your data
Open Bhopper, tap the Me tab, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete my data. This permanently deletes every report you've ever submitted from our backend, clears your local favorites, and resets the device UUID to a fresh value. The action cannot be undone.
You can also email us at the address below and we'll process the same deletion on your behalf.
Children's privacy
Bhopper is rated 17+ on the App Store because of the bar / alcohol subject matter. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, surface a notice inside the app on next launch.
